IVAN Commmunity Air Monitoring Network
The Identifying Violations Affecting Neighborhoods (IVAN) self-reporting tool is an online resource that allows members of the community to report any environmental violations that are occurring around them to the proper authorities. The IVAN program also contains an environmental justice task force that meets once a month to discuss reported incidents and the follow-ups by authorities with community members. The IVAN program brings together community, regulatory agencies, and environmental justice advocates to provide a better environment for all through conversations and a forum to discuss accountability.
The moderate success of IVAN served as a base for the development of the IVAN Air community air monitoring network (CAMN). The IVAN Air project is a collaboration between environmental justice, academia, regulators, and the community. IVAN Air consists of more than forty (40) community air monitoring stations that monitor air quality at the neighborhood level. Serving as a model for a community network the influence of IVAN Air is observed in the design of the AB 617 programs; Community Air Protection Program (CAPP) and the Community Air Grants. CAPP brings community monitoring following the IVAN Air model to disadvantaged communities throughout the state of California; one of the missions that IVAN Air had when it was conceived.
