Asthma
Intervention and
Management

Imperial County has some of the highest asthma emergency room visit and hospitalization rates in California, particularly among children. Data from the California Department of Public Health show rates that often exceed the state average by more than double, driven by poor air quality from agricultural dust, cross-border pollution, pesticide drift, vehicle emissions, and particulate matter from the drying Salton Sea.

Asthma is a leading cause of school absences in the Imperial Valley, with symptoms frequently worsening during wind events and unhealthy air quality days. CCV programs focus on training parents, school health aides, promotoras, and after-school staff to help families manage asthma and recognize early warning signs before emergencies occur.

Many homes face environmental asthma triggers such as mold, dust, pests, and smoke, compounded by older housing and limited air filtration. CCV provides bilingual, community-based education critical in a county where more than 85% of residents are Latino and many face language and healthcare access barriers.

Asthma Management Academy

Administered by Breathe California (via the state program California Breathing/California Department of Public Health), the Asthma Management Academy (AsMA) is a free, three-day live training (available in English and Spanish) designed for community health workers (CHWs) and other health educators to learn how to deliver evidence-based asthma self-management education.

Respira Sano

Respira Sano is a CCV program funded through the CalEPA Environmental Justice Action Grant that provides free, home-visiting asthma education and intervention for Imperial Valley residents living with asthma. Our trained educators come to your home to help you identify and reduce triggers, build an asthma action plan, and practice day-to-day self-management.
